Wang Lina, a graduate of Beijing Union University, is a college
graduate "village official" in Ertiao Village, Mafang Town of Pinggu District.
She has now become a household name in Mafang. The villagers kindly call her
"Strawberry angel".
In 2006, she became one of the first group of the college
graduate "village officials" to serve in the rural area.
During the first several days after she began work, Wang
collected and read reference materials about rural policies and other relevant
information. After becoming familiar with the policy that Beijing encourages
farmers to build greenhouses with a subsidy of 5,000 yuan, she suggested to the
village Party secretary that greenhouses should be built and an area should be
designated to cultivate strawberries. After discussion, the village committee
agreed with her suggestion and decided to designate an area to cultivate
strawberries.
In order to learn more about strawberry cultivation, Wang went
to all the well-known strawberry cultivation bases in Hebei, Henan, Shandong and
other provinces within two months, bringing back a large amount of cultivation
experiences. The 69 strawberry greenhouses in the village were built as planned.
At that time, few villagers showed interest in planting strawberries. Through
broadcast in the village, Wang introduced to villagers the cultivating knowledge
and analyzed the profits of planting strawberries. Wang succeeded in persuading
18 households in the village to sign up to be the first batch of strawberry
cultivators.

When her work in the village was under full swing, however, she
received a job offer from the Bank of China, with whom she previously had an
interview with. She hesitated because she was still an intern and was able to
leave if she wanted.
Two roasted corns however, made her change her mind. Wang went
to the broadcasting station at 5:00 or 6:00 am every morning. She remembered one
morning that an auntie came to her with two roasted corns and said, "Girl, it is
not good if you do not have breakfast. Here is some corn grown by my family, and
roasted for you before the sun rose. They are burnt, but strike them against the
wall, they will be fine, eat them now!"
Wang said she was touched by that, and she felt determined to
achieve something in the village.
Every week, Wang spent four hours on the bus to get to Beijing
Forestry and Fruit Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural
Sciences at the Fragrant Hills Park from the village, to learn cultivating
knowledge. She recorded the cultivating technologies taught by the experts on
camera and played the video for the villagers when she came back.
