Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a proven source of remedies for female health problems. Millions of Chinese women regularly treat any gynecological complaints they might experience with herbs that enrich the blood, replenish energy, reduce fatigue and improve the appetite. Certain Chinese herbs also cure leucorrhea, irregular menstruation, and menopausal syndrome, as well as postpartum weakness due to loss of blood.

Regulating menstruation takes priority in TCM gynecological treatments. The emphasis in this respect is on revitalizing the bloodstream, which in TCM terminology is dominated by qi (vital energy). The qi must be maintained at a constant level to ensure that the uterus is in harmony with other organs, and hence that menstruation and other functions are normal.

Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Chinese angelica root, dang gui) and Coicis Semen (yi yi ren) for Young Adult Women

A woman's uterus begins to function at adolescence and the onset of menarche. The related stresses of puberty often result in menstrual irregularities and leucorrhea.

A good remedy for dizziness and hypoglycemia is radix angelicae sinensis (Chinese angelica root, or dang gui) which enriches and stimulates the bloodstream and alleviates menstrual pain. It also moistens the intestines and thus relieves constipation. This prescription may also be used to relieve the problems of stagnant blood and qi as a result of "cold" disorders, manifest in irregular menses, amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) and dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

The symptoms of leucorrhea are a whitish or yellowish odorless discharge, a pale, sallow complexion, fatigue, poor appetite, a white-furred tongue, and moderate-to-weak pulse.
A dysfunctional spleen is generally at the root of this complaint. The TCM therapeutic principle, therefore, is that of strengthening the spleen function by replenishing qi and removing dampness.

The TCM prescription in this respect is a combined decoction of coicis semen (yi yi ren), bighead atractylodes (bai zhu), Chinese yam (shan yao), atractylodes rhizome (cang zhu) and poriae cocos sclerotium (fu ling).

Donkey-Hide Gelatin (e jiao) and Chinese Motherwort (yi mu cao) for Postnatal Women
Childbirth commonly leaves postnatal women suffering from anemia and blood stasis. Anemia, in turn, is a cause or dizziness, childbed fever (puerperal sepsis), constipation, insufficient mother's milk, somatic pain and tics in the hands and feet. Abdominal pain, childbed fever, and persistent lochia (post partum vaginal discharge) are symptoms of blood stasis.

Chinese Motherwort (yi mu cao)

The best treatments for postnatal recovery comprise the Chinese herbs donkey-hide gelatin (e jiao) and Chinese Motherwort (yi mu cao). Donkey-hide gelatin (e jiao) enriches the blood, halts bleeding, nourishes the yin and relieves dryness.
